Mythology, combat, and a heart-wrenching story. Could we possibly have asked more of the next iteration in the God of War franchise? If you ask me, no. But the cultured and infinitely more experienced team at Metro GameCentral would like you to know that the game is a ‘more flawed experience than its predecessor.’ You’ll find the rest of his opinions and more in this exploration of what the critics think of God of War: Ragnarök

The critics, as you’ve seen by the comment above, are not afraid to pull their punches. However, as we’ll point out, not everyone is as critical of the game. In fact, many critics have given the game a solid 8 out of 10. 99% of the critics recognized by OpenCritic recommend the game, and its Top Critic Average is a near-perfect 94.

Simon Cardy of IGN says that the game is ‘an enthralling spectacle to behold and an even more exciting one to take the reins of, God of War Ragnarök melds action and adventure together to create a new, unforgettable Norse saga.’ He adds further that it is ‘a complete work of art from top to bottom.’

Chris Tapsell of Eurogamer says it best with his comment. ‘Much like its heroes, God of War: Ragnarök learns to love itself for what it truly is: gargantuan, excessive, and wonderfully absurd.’

You’ll have to read David Jenkins’ full review to discover how much he actually enjoyed the game. Just like he asserts Kratos’ personality thaws as the the game progresses, so too does Jenkins’ opinion once you delve into his full critique.

The most interesting review comes from James Billcliffe of VG247. He asserts that ‘Although it starts out remarkably similar to the 2018 God of War both mechanically and graphically, God of War Ragnarök gradually builds into a meaningful evolution for the series, expanding the scope of gameplay both stealthily and overtly, while delivering a tense and twisty story that bends legend around its characters in exciting and endlessly interesting ways.’

In short, the game seems to be a massive hit among those who have had a chance to play it ahead of its global console launch on November 8th.
In other news, Sony has revealed brand new graphics modes for God of War: Ragnarök on PlayStation 4 and 5.

I hail from the awe-inspiring beauty of South Africa. Born and raised in Pretoria, I've always had a deep interest in local history, particularly conflicts, architecture, and our country's rich past of being a plaything for European aristocracy. 'Tis an attempt at humor. My interest in history has since translated into hours at a time researching everything from the many reasons the Titanic sank (really, it's a wonder she ever left Belfast) to why Minecraft is such a feat of human technological accomplishment. I am an avid video gamer (Sims 4 definitely counts as video gaming, I checked) and particularly enjoy playing the part of a relatively benign overlord in Minecraft. I enjoy the diverse experiences gaming offers the player. Within the space of a few hours, a player can go from having a career as an interior decorator in Sims, to training as an archer under Niruin in Skyrim. I believe video games have so much more to teach humanity about community, kindness, and loyalty, and I enjoy the opportunity to bring concepts of the like into literary pieces.
